Its red color protects it from the sun at such high elevations. This algae is actually food for small mountain creatures such as rotifers, rotifers, nematodes, ice worms and springtails. The way it’s constructed, if one person stands in one corner of the tiled wall, and another person stands on the opposite side, they can whisper to each other and actually hear what the other said. CHRIS: Hailing from North Carolina, Harriette Thompson was a classical pianist who took up running in her 70s, and in 2015 became the oldest woman to run a marathon, at age 92. Two years later, in June of 2017, at age 94, she ran a half marathon in San Diego! Harriette passed away later that year, but left one hell of a legacy of inspiration!

NANCY: Edgar Allan Poe is most closely associated with Baltimore and Boston, but he also made his mark in South Carolina. For a year, from 1827 to 1828, he was in the Army, stationed at Fort Moultrie on Sullivan’s Island, which is about 10 miles from Charleston. He enlisted under the alias Edgar Perry, and though he did well - he was promoted to Sergeant Major - he chose to hide this part of his resume and instead say he was off having adventures in Europe! Not sure why. Anyway, there’s a restaurant on Sullivan’s Island called Poe’s Tavern, where some of the offerings are named after his works. Drink a Devil in the Belfry before enjoying a Tell Tale Heart Burger!

CHRIS: If, like my wife, you are interested in doomsday cults, and you find yourself in Philadelphia, check out the Cave of Kelpius, located in Wissahickon Valley Park. The Cave of Kelpius is named after Johannes Kelpius, a Transylvanian mystic who was born in the same town as Vlad the Impaler - Sighișoara, on January 1, 1667, and moved to the colony of Pennsylvania in 1694. In the 1690s he predicted the end of the world twice, first in 1694, then in 1700. Kelpius amassed 40 followers, who all moved into this cave with him and called themselves “The Society of the Woman in the Wilderness,” after the biblical account of a woman who fled into the wilderness to await the rapture. The group soon earned the less elegant nickname “The Hermits of the Wissahickon.” They passed the time in the same way I myself would pass the time if I knew the world was ending: by studying stars and plants, writing poetry, and crafting a pipe organ. Interestingly, he died on his 41st birthday, January 1, 1708.

Nicknamed The Gem of the San Juans by locals, Orcas Island offers a great variety of activities, from hiking and sailing, to art galleries and fine dining. Thank you Wiki for supplying the history of the island’s name: “The name ‘Orcas’ is a shortened form of Horcasitas, from Juan Vicente de Güemes Padilla Horcasitas y Aguayo, 2nd Count of Revillagigedo, the Viceroy of New Spain who sent an exploration expedition under Francisco de Eliza to the Pacific Northwest in 1791.”
